Photography as Meditation

Stone and maple leaf Image #20121111-636

As a fine art nature photographer I have discovered that the quiet time I spend while walking/hiking to my photographic destination is an important part of my creative process. Whenever I feel a creative block while creating photographs I stop and take some time to just be. This always seems to reinvigorate my body, my mind, and my creativity. Recently, I have realized that the act of creating a photograph is in itself meditation, at least for me. While I am photographing I experience the phenomenon known as “time quickening”. This happens when we are so involved in what we are doing that we lose the perspective of self and hours fly by and seem to be mere seconds. Some people refer to this as being in “the zone”. I have come to understand that this in itself is a form of creative meditation.

  1. An artist and a Philosopher! I love being in ‘the zone’, too! This photograph is so simple, but a perfect example of being on the path.

Agree. I have always described photography as being “like therapy to me”…
